A lot can be learned from this letter. It is addressed to his wife, promising her freedom from slavery after the war. This shows the hopefulness and confidence that the soldier had. Since he was married to a black woman, he was most likely black as well, although it is not clear whether he is a slave or not. Obviously since Samuel Cabble was able to write this letter, he must have had an education of some sort. However, he spells many simple words wrong, which suggests that he likely did not have a very good education. This primary source gives us the first-hand perspective of someone who fought in the Civil War.
